Excerpt from:
To a Blank Sheet of Paper
By Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

"Wan-visage thing! thy virgin leaf
To me looks more than deadly pale,
Unknowing what may stain thee yet,-
a poem or a tale."

It’s been a while since I’ve thought about writing. I’m trying my best to get back to normal, so bare with me as I recalibrate.

Driscription Practice Prompt: Look around and pick an item that catches your eye. Describe it in a way that invokes a sense or feeling. For an extra challenge, try avoiding the start of sentences with ‘the’, ‘a’, and ‘my’. Remember to have fun!

Small scuffs littered the grey wheels revealing memories of the fun it experienced. Stickers in various stages of peeling are lined with the grime from the tiny fingers that once loved pointing out all the distinct colors. Echoes of nursery rhymes ring loudly off the yellowing walls of the abandoned toy room. Various fragments of discarded dolls, formerly cherished, lie smothered in the accumulation of forgottenness. Particles of dust swirl through the stale air embedding into unforgiving nostrils causing a series of violent eruptions to spew.

Description Practice Prompt: Dig deep! Pick an emotion and describe it in a way that shows it without telling what the emotion is.

As a warm breeze stirred the tall oak leaves, I lifted my finger to the thick, fluffy cloud shuttling across the sky. “Did you know that if you stare at a cloud long enough, it’ll dissipate?”

She cocks her head to the side while rolling her eyes.

“Don’t believe me, try it,” I say daringly. Her eyes swing from me, tracing the outline of fluff. The longer she stares the wider her eyes get until finally the midday sun burst through the diminishing cloud.

Description Practice Prompt: With Christmas around the corner, let’s describe a present under the tree!

Dinosaurs prance under my fingers with the crinkle of plastic filling the air. With the length of the gift standing over half the size of the tree, I struggle to place it majestically. The bag that encases it leaves room for their imagination to run wild. I listen as they spout numerous guesses of what it could be. My neutral face leaves their questions unanswered causing their excitement to flourish. Tiny feet are struggling to contain their patience as they hop about the room in anticipation. Small fingers explore the green bag that encases the gift, searching for a hint of what may lie inside. Too large to lift, their interest is piqued.
